Types of Tennis Court Surfaces

A tennis court surface is designed and specified to be porous to allow the surface to be an all-weather sports facility and will not affect the playing performance of the players.

There are several different artificial court surfaces available in the sports surfaces market, and we at Tennis Court builders can supply them. These are macadam surfacing, polymeric surfacing, sand dressed, artificial clay courts, and artificial grass flooring:

  • Macadam Surfacing – We can install a tarmac open textured macadam surface with rich acrylic paint to suit various sports, sizes and designs.

  • Polymeric Surfacing- We also install a rubberised sports surface with two coats of coloured polyurethane paint.

  • Sand Dressed /Sand Filled - Synthetic sports surface meeting the playing characteristics of LTA, ITF and SAPCA. It requires regular maintenance such as drag brushing to clean the fibres of dirt and contamination.

  • Artificial Clay Courts – With the same playing characteristics as natural clay courts, including player/surface and ball/surface interaction.

  • Artificial Grass Flooring - Synthetic grass flooring keeps the appearance and characteristics of grass surfaces without the gruelling maintenance requirements.

In that case, our professional consultants will talk you through the different surface types and let you know which type of tennis surface would be best for your particular facility and what maintenance will be required after the tennis court installation.

  1. Dig up the existing surfaces

  2. Lay the base

  3. Install the tarmac

  4. Apply the binder

  5. Paint the surface in your chosen colours with a non-slip paint

  6. Apply line markings

It is always crucial to have experts on hand to ensure that you will be getting the most outstanding results possible.

Sport Facility Maintenance

It is essential to keep the court clean in your sports facilities using a jet wash and keeping up with the maintenance.  You need to ensure that leaves, bird droppings and other debris are kept off the tennis surface to ensure that it is safe for players to play on and not affect their playing performance.

Servicing courts need to include the provision of court area service maintenance because ongoing cleaning, pressure washing, moss/algae treatment, and re-colouring of the non-slip paint must be carried out to keep the playing characteristics and the safety of the players. This will also support playing performance.

The sports courts must meet the specifications and accreditations set out in the governing body guidelines, and this involves meeting a TRRL 55 slip resistance throughout its lifespan.

Tennis Court Services in Creag na Cuinneige

Players on the tennis courts, whether on private garden areas, school MUGA courts, professional tennis clubs, etc., want to play on a safe tennis surface.

So the maintenance procedures are vital in ensuring annual programmes are put in place for essential repairs and weed growth prevention for better ball bounce. Other maintenance procedures include jet wash cleaning and respraying anti-slip coloured coatings with new line marking, which can also improve the appearance of your facility.

Re-spraying and re-colouring the courts can be carried out only in dry conditions and are applied using an airless spray with either acrylic paint or polyurethane painted materials.

Both water-based acrylic paint and polyurethane paint can be sprayed onto the surface on an open textured porous macadam surface. Normally, a binder coat is recommended to strengthen the existing macadam surfacing. On polymeric rubber sports court surfaces, only a polyurethane coating can only be used, and this is a moisture curing paint application with line markings added after the painted surface.

What causes bubbles or blisters on a tennis court surface?

When there is too much moisture underneath the court's surface and it can't leave, blisters and bubbles occur. The heat in Florida causes moisture to escape fast towards the surface, causing the trapped vapour to disrupt the connection between the coating and the substrate.

What are the different types of tennis court surfaces?

Tennis courts are made of four different types of surfaces: grass courts, artificial clay courts, natural clay courts, hard courts, and artificial grass courts.

Tennis hard courts come in a variety of colours and are composed of synthetic/acrylic layers on top of a concrete or asphalt base. Because there is limited energy absorption by the court, unlike grass courts, these courts tend to play medium-speed to rapid. A clay court and a grass court only come in natural colours. A clay court is often red-brown in colour while a grass court is green.
